The best designer looks from the Oscars

Posted on May 04 2021

The red carpet at the 2021 Oscars was absolutely bursting at the seams with fabulous fashion. Trends this year included bold colours, full skirts and texture, texture, texture. Here’s a hit list of the best outfits from film’s night of nights.

One of our favourite looks from the night was Carey Mulligan, in Oscar-worthy head-to-toe gold Valentino. The huge full skirt and matching sleek bandeau top were rendered in an eminently touchable stiff metallic fabric that had eyes on her all night.

Young actor and singer Zendaya absolutely stunned in a floor length buttercup yellow Valentino gown with a subtle train and dramatic cutout at the front. She added glitz with a dramatic diamond choker and pendant.

Viola Davis, who was nominated for Best Actress for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, wore a spectacular Alexander McQueen gown with a detailed bodice and a drop-waisted skirt. She paired it with a beaded Jimmy Choo clutch.

Halle Berry wore deep lilac Dolce & Gabbana to present the awards for Best Cinematography and Best Production. The dress had a deep V strapless top with a huge bow detail at the front and a dreamy, floaty skirt.

Also presenting awards on the big night was Reese Witherspoon, who was looking dramatic in red and purple Dior. The dress featured knotted straps and a flattering empire-line waist.

Isla Fisher Oscars 2021

Home-grown talent Isla Fisher accompanied her husband Sacha Baron Cohen – nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Best Adapted Screenplay for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm – to an Oscars celebration right here in Sydney. But the distance didn’t stop them from dressing to the nines: Cohen paired a brown dinner jacket and bow tie with cream coloured trousers and a pair of smart slippers, all from Ralph Lauren, while Fisher wore an absolutely classic Dior gown with a plunging neckline, empire waist and A-line skirt.

Colman Domingo, one of the stars of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, hit the carpet in a spectacular sequinned suit in an incandescent shade of pink. With highlights of gold buttons and jewellery, the outfit made him a contender for best-dressed man.

Amanda Seyfried Oscars 2021

While she didn’t win Best Supporting Actress, Amanda Seyfried did manage to get everyone’s attention in redder-than-the-carpet Armani. The stunning structured bodice countered the full, frothy skirt, and she kept the rest of the look sleek and simple.

Vanessa Kirby Oscars 2021

Vanessa Kirby, who was nominated for Best Actress for her turn in Pieces of a Woman, was one of the few stars who went for a simple and pale outfit on the night. Her Gucci gown, in the softest pink, was structured and sleekly form fitting, except for the bustle at the back. For a bit of contrast, she teamed it with dark lips and nails.

Lakeith Stanfield eschewed the traditional tux in favour of a ’70s-inspired Saint Laurent suit – custom made for him from a design from the fashion house’s womenswear collection.
